What's Your Favorite Mary J. Blige Cover?

In honor of absolutely nothing, we present to you this week's Soul-Poll. Mary J. Blige, for at least a little while, was not only referred to as the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" but also the "Queen of Remakes." Derogatory subtext aside, Mary J. is probably the most suited to take on the songs she's covered, being that she's the only artist with this level of mainstream visibility that for the past sixteen years has been able to channel the Old School with nary a flinch. My personal favorite? "I'm In Love" (which I'm certain will put me in the minority) with "Sweet Thing" and "Hello It's Me" running close by. What's your favorite cover by MJB? Vote after the bounce! (NOTE: We only included what can be referred to as "proper" covers, which keeps the list from being a mile long.)

I have to agree as well, she did the damn thing with "I'm In Love" on Mary. I am a big Gap Band fan and she really made it her own. And covers can be a very touchy subject with me. So no Nova, you are not in the minority. :)

I have top agree "I'm in love" is definitly. And its actually on The Gap Band ballad cd. And I always thought Mary's version of Sweet Thing was hardier, edgy and more of pain, relationship record. While Chaka's was sweet and sexy. I'm goin Down is great so is One.

sign me up for 'im in love' and 'as'. but she's definitely the queen of remakes. looking back, she has done a lot of them hasn't she??

It was a very difficult choice, but I had to pick " A Dream". "Our Love" came in a strong second for me.

Gosh, this was kinda hard. I chose "Sweet Thing", however "A Dream" and "I'm Goin Down" are tied for a very close second. She didn't disappoint with "Natural Woman" either. Let me just stick with my top choice and leave it alone. :-)

When I chose Sweet Thing as one of my top 50 songs, I put Chaka's version out of respect. But I must say, Mary's version is my fave. *looking around for Chaka stans.*

I'm Going Down ties for #1. She KILLS it.

i voted for "I'm In Love." i just love the way she effortlessly kills that track. it's a lesser-known ballad by The Gap Band, which may be surprising to some. i don't know that it's on any of their best-of's, but people should definitely check for it. Mary's version is very close to the original, and i just think it's gorgeous. it's that smooth shit!

mine has always been A Dream, I think I'm in the minority with it. I love Natural Woman and of course I'm Going Down also. Overjoyed is like MY SONG, but she just doesn't do me like Stevie can.....

Wow! This is a good post! I didn't even know that "I'm In Love" was a cover. Had no idea. I gotta go with that one, it had to grow on me at first but now when it comes up in the shuffle I just can't skip it. Ever.

My vote goes to 'As,' I just love Mary's vocals on that track.

I had no idea 'I'm In Love' was a cover. Who recorded the original version.
