For Those Who Still Care, Kanye Presents 'Love Lockdown' 2.0
Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" is proving itself to be the most polarizing song to emerge in a minute. People either love it, or they hate it. Personally, I'm over it already. The official studio version that surfaced last week rubbed my ears the wrong way, and I clearly wasn't the only one who wasn't feeling it because Ye went back to the studio to make some revisions thanks to the WTF-like public outcry. So now we have the officially official official version with some new taiko drums and freshly resung parts from Kanye. Oh joy. I swear, I would have loved the dirty drawers off this song if a real vocalist actually sung on it and not Kanye-Pain, but nooooo. Not that Kanye gives a damn, because he posted a pointed message to the haters on his blog on Monday: "Sidebar... if you don't like autotune... too bad cause I love it and have been using it since the College Dropout!!!" Guess he told me! What. Ever. I suppose that this new version sounds slightly better than the last, which honestly isn't saying a whole lot. I'd rather listen to the live performance saved on my DVR, thank you very much. For those whose hearts belong to the live "Love Lockdown," there's a treat for you after the bounce. [2DB/MTV/KU]

Angie B | September 19, 2008 10:38 AM | PermalinkI won't lie...I LOVE music and this track is no exception. I faced the fact that Kanye West is not rapping on this track. At the VMA's I was like "WTF" but and once I got over the "no rapping" thing...I gave it a chance. Now, I"m feeling it!
ohsosoulful | September 18, 2008 10:18 PM | PermalinkI am soooo NOT feeling this song... this or the original version... they both are terrible... I got a feeling the album is going to get pushed to next year
Eb | September 18, 2008 10:11 AM | Permalink...you know that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts is in the bath singing along to Prince with her phones on?

Sharonda | September 17, 2008 10:26 PM | PermalinkI simply love this record! What a nice expansion of the Ye aesthetic. The drums, the effective use of autotune and the trance feel add up to a nice shot in the arm for mainstream hip-hop/pop. Applauding...
Langston | September 17, 2008 7:41 PM | Permalink=X Wow, I feel kind of bad for saying it, but I still like the song. Lyrics and all....kinda hits home at some spots...but yeah, that's just me!
Felisa | September 17, 2008 7:09 PM | Permalinkcount me as one of negative polarity when it comes to this song. it's not really anything related to the sound of the music . . . it's the lyrics, which are just so wack to me. it seems as if he jotted these down while he was on the toilet or something and then just ran with them to the booth, unfinished. lyrically, this just doesn't feel like a complete song to me.
additionally, i think i'm just sick of Kanye being in such a rush to get his "art" out that he has to revisit & revise so much. if you're such a genius, be patient enough to get it right the first time. i'm sick of hearing about all these multiple videos and now songs.
and finally, auto-tune. people have been using crack since like the early 80s--that don't make it right, Kanye. the general consensus is that people are getting sick of the robot voice, especially in this case. to take a generally bad singing voice and auto-tune it and expect it sound great . . . that is an insult to my intelligence (and hearing)! and to use it for the entire song--man, that's just too much.
for the most part, i love Kanye's music, but i can't ride for this. i'm keeping my love locked down for "Love Lockdown." hopefully there'll be a lot to love on 808's & Heartbreak.
dar | September 17, 2008 5:53 PM | PermalinkYe is an assclown for writing that shit about auto-tune. It's not a point of people not liking it, it's a point of it being yet another played-out trend that wore itself thin eons ago. Everyone's using it as a crutch. Also, the fact that he used it since College Dropout is inconsequential because not everyone was (certainly doesn't excuse running it into the ground now) and he ain't invent the shit, make it cool, or perfect it in anyway.
His hasn't gotten any of my dollars since College Dropout because of his attitude. I cannot support this level of assholery, no matter how talented he is. lol
nOvaMaticWait... wait... nope, it still sucks.
Nate | September 17, 2008 2:51 PM | PermalinkOkay, I can't believe I give a damn still, but this sounds better. The auto-tune is scaled back (and less echo), the drums are hitting harder, and earlier? I think with using auto-tune in this manner you either let the real vocal shine through more or you go the other direction and full-on Daft Punk singing robot. The balance seems better. I'm happy. Now the bring on the millions of remixes (ugh...).
