It’s been quite some time since we’ve last heard from singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé. Her third album Real Life was met with critical acclaim upon its 2019 release and it seems, like many artists, the world events over the last couple of years prompted her to take a moment out of the spotlight to reflect. After resurfacing on social media just this month, she offers fans a stirring anthem of tenacity with her latest single “Family.” She says the track “marks a new beginning on many levels” for her and explains, “It’s an ode to resilience, rebirth, and renewal! It was created last year in my home studio, a time and place in which I felt more creative freedom than ever before. I hope that it uplifts and empowers each listener!”
As a demonstration of her revived sense of artistic energy, the track’s release was accompanied by an equally spirited visual. Directed by Lewis Cater, we watch as Sandé saunters along a city street. A couple of strangers join her along her journey before she breaks into dance. In the middle of a courtyard, more bystanders join in on the routine, which was choreographed by London’s Olivia Lockwood. By the feature’s end, Sandé is slightly elevated above the others, symbolic of not only our collective connection to others but that perhaps our individual grounding is actually rooted in each other.
