Black Eyed Peas came into 2018 swinging, ready to silence any skeptic notions that their best days were behind them. In the months that followed, they continued to rain blows with their killer combinations of addictive singles and striking visuals. By the time they finally released the long-awaited album Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 last week, it was pretty much lights out. Of course, there are real no losers here. The trio returned to their hip-hop roots and delivered a project they can be proud of; as a result, fans received a noteworthy addition to their year-end playlists. Even if it doesn’t chart as well as previous projects (spoiler alert: it probably won’t), Masters of the Sun is still a win in our opinion.
To celebrate the release, BEP simultaneously premiered the album’s sixth music video – which also happens to be the sixth track in the set – “Dopeness.” The catchy jam features talented South Korean singer-songwriter/rapper CL, whose flow fits in the pocket with the fellas. The visuals are equally entertaining as eye-popping gold accents augment a black-and-white aesthetic that centers on a ’60s-style heist. As the crew plays Robin Hood & His Merry Men (and Women), it’s easy to root for them because they look fly as hell…plus, you know, the whole “giving back to the poor” thing.
Watch Black Eyed Peas, de facto member Jessica Reynoso and CL live life like it’s golden on “Dopeness.” Masters of the Sun Vol. 1 is currently available for streaming and download at your favorite digital hot spot. Oddly, “Street Livin'” and “Get It” didn’t make the album cut, but there’s still plenty of dopeness on deck. In addition to Slick Rick (whom we previously heard on “Constant Part 1 & 2”), the album also features Nas, the late Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Posdnuos, Esthero and Nicole Scherzinger.
