Freelance Makes A Bold Statement With Debut Album 'Yes Today'

Harlem-based music collective Freelance dropped their debut album Yes Today and it is 13-tracks of spirited and inspired brilliance. The insanely talented and relatively young band consists of keyboardist Chad “Asuar the Ambassador” Selph, saxophonist Craig Hill, guitarist Yasser Tejeda, drummer Justin Tyson, bassist David “DJ” Ginyard and Tim “Smithsoneon” Smith on vocals. Individual members have played with the industry’s elite — including Takuya Karoda, Solange, Robert Glasper Experiment and Esperanza Spalding — and have now come to together to craft their own magic. Though their sound crisscrosses an array of genres and the influence of legendary artists like Earth, Wind & Fire is apparent on the album, Freelance has created a dynamic and polished lane of their own.

Yes Today kicks off by easing the listener into the vibrant and melodically complex lead single “Band Plays On,” which features acclaimed trumpeter Darren Barrett and showcases the virtuosity of each band member.  Though the tempo gradually slows just a bit from there, the energy and intensity are maintained with the next three tracks — including their smoldering groove “Your Love,” which channels the genius of Fela Kuti, and the contemplative “What We Fear,” which serves as the band’s commentary on extrajudicial violence. The groove continues with “Hope” and “A Love Cream” before the band switches the flow with the J Dilla-inspired empowerment anthem “Why Wait.”  The crew puts us back in a sultry mood with “Get Away with You” and “Around” before closing out the project with the infectious title track “Yes Today.”

Overall, the album exemplifies the skill and exhilarating energy of Freelance. The entire project just feels good and has us looking to catch the band in all of their live performance glory.
