It's been a minute since Cassie dropped a proper project, but it looks like the singer and fashion plate is making up for lost time. Over the summer, she dropped her latest single, the despairing kiss-off "Love A Loser." Now she hits us with a double whammy, dropping both the song's official video and the larger short film that the video is sourced from.
Both projects follow the doomed love of a highly dysfunctional couple on a road trip. The story comes off as a mix of Jay-Z and Beyoncé's "03 Bonnie & Clyde" and Rihanna's "We Found Love," minus the criminal elements and (most of) the drug-induced hysteria, of course. We see Cassie looking gorgeous as ever in multiple jaw-dropping looks as she and her heavily tattooed beau love, fuss and fight while in cars, hotel rooms, liquor stores and other stylishly shot locations. Meanwhile, the song's guest rapper G-Eazy gets his own special feature in a hotel room of his own as he contemplates his own toxic situationship.
The 10-minute short film, which appears to simply be titled Cassie, dives further into the relationship between Cassie and her tattooed bae. We hear voiceovers of their deep conversations about memories, goals and their deepest desires. As well, though the instrumental for "Love A Loser" is played briefly, the song is not the focal point. Instead, the camera focuses on the volatile love affair between the star-crossed lovers. Ultimately, they get in one final fight in which they let each other know that they "don't f**k with you" (actually, several F-bombs are dropped during the sequence). After that, we're shown Cassie driving solo before the clip fades to black.
We're not sure if the video and short film mean that Cassie's finally going to deliver a proper sophomore album — which would be her first since 2006's Cassie. But we're hopeful, especially since we hear a few snippets of new music throughout the film, including a lengthy preview of a new song over the closing credits.
