Gallant Soars At NPR Music's 'Tiny Desk Concert'

Around this time last year, relative newcomer Gallant was well on his way to establishing himself as a formidable artist ahead of his full-length debut Ology. The Bounce-Worthy singer/songwriter went on to dominate 2016, parlaying his talent into successful tours, a trip to the Obama-era White House, a 2017 GRAMMY nod for Best Urban Contemporary Album and most recently a coveted spot on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list. Sure his hot collabo with Tablo and Eric Nam hints that he's ready to move on to a new project, but the fact is that Ology is still very much a part of his present. He doesn't seem to mind, though, as the DMV native recently returned home to step behind NPR's Tiny Desk.

Even if you know Ology back-to-front and have seen all of the album's music videos, this mini-concert is something you won't want to miss. For starters, Gallant on stage is simply a joy to watch. His performance quirks are endearing and being able to actually "see" his glass-shattering falsetto in action lets us know it's real. Plus, thanks in part to some talented friends, he manages to deliver fresh takes on three signature tracks. Magnetic Chi-town rapper (and Chance the Rapper cohort) Saba proved why he's one to watch as he debuted a delightfully frenetic guest verse on "Bourbon." Keyboardist Dani Ivory (aka DANiiVORY) doesn't try to mimic Jhené Aiko's signature vocals on "Skipping Stones," choosing instead to let her supple tone speak for itself. Gallant shoulders the vocal burden of breakout hit "Weight In Gold" alone, however, and the result is a true glimpse into his musical soul.

Catch the full performance below, download Ology if you haven't already and check his website to see which festival stops he'll be making over the next few months. As for Saba, he begins the Bucket List Tour, his first as headliner, in early March. Get your copy of Bucket List Project via iTunes and visit his website for tour dates and locations.
