Kanye West's 'American Idol' Audition Is Comedy 'Gold'

Love it or hate it, American Idol is responsible for some of the biggest stars in recent music history. That's why year after year, thousands of hopefuls line up for hours for a shot at fame. In fact, the audition episodes can be quite a bit more entertaining than the actual show itself. Such was the case during the San Francisco round of auditions when an unexpected contestant named Kanye West decided to join the quest for a golden ticket to Hollywood.

GQ's Most Stylish Man of 2015 opted to dress down for the audition (aside from sporting his Yeezy Boost 350's, of course). While his ever-supportive wife Kim Kardashian-West waited backstage with bearded host Ryan Seacrest, Kanye got into character, walking on stage with the nervous energy of an eager unknown looking for his come-up. The tickled judges (Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick, Jr.) got in on the act as well, making the usual requests like "Tell us your name and where you're from." After inquiring about his audition selection, the "contestant" informed the panel that he'd be performing an original rap that just so happens to feature the name of one of the judges. With Kanye's swagger on chill for the moment, J.Lo happily stepped in to bring some pomposity into the room when she deadpanned, "It better f**king be me."

Watch the shenanigans unfold below as an enthusiastic 'Ye performs his hit "Gold Digger" and makes Jeeeenifer's day. Obviously, this was filmed a couple of months ago (as little Saint is still snug as a bug in a rug in Mommy Kim's tummy in the clip), but following the lukewarm reception of his current rant "FACTS," it's nice to see Mr. West not take himself too seriously. American Idol returns for its farewell season starting tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET on FOX. Head to the website for exclusive content, behind-the-scenes interviews and updates.
