Kenny Wesley aka the Soulful Nerd here, and welcome to my new column at SoulBounce, “Soulful Nerd’s Seen & Heard In Europe”!
What is this column all about? Well, for some time now I’ve been planning to move to Paris. I’ve always loved the language and the culture, and Europe has been extremely receptive to my artistry (my first magazine cover and nationally broadcasted radio interviews were all in Europe, many years after my recording career began in the United States). In April 2014, I took a trip to a jazz conference in Bremen, Germany and decided to extend my stay by a month to explore Berlin a bit. The overwhelming amount of inspiration and support I experienced from the music community caused me to change my plans and move to Berlin instead of Paris.
My transition to Berlin happened last fall, and since then I’ve acquired a work visa and have done a few tours, both as a solo artist and as a sideman. However, I’ve decided to spend the bulk of my time composing, writing poetry and prose, experimenting with new technologies and different styles of music and go to as many live concerts as I possibly can. My first impression of live music in Germany is that attention to detail is very important. Many artists have very specific lighting cues, visual effects and this huge, almost cinematic-sounding drumming style — a well-oiled live show, in general.
So, I decided I couldn’t simply just experience all of this great art, food and culture by myself. I wanted to give all you, my fellow “Nerdlinks” a deeper look into my new world and share this exciting chapter of my journey exclusively here at SoulBounce. I’ll share with you all of my new musical discoveries, concert reviews and exclusive interviews with top urban artists residing or touring here in Europe.
