I’ll never forget the first time I heard Carmen Rodgers‘ song “Free.” It was around mid-2005 and the song was in rotation on one of Music Choice’s R&B channels. However, whenever the song would come on, there never was any information on it. Unlike the other songs that played, this song never had so much as a title or even the artist listed. I searched high and low to find out who was behind this song that remained in my head long after it was over. I even emailed Music Choice in hopes of finding out who sang this song, but to no avail. It wasn’t until Rodgers’ released her second album and its lead single “It’s Me” that I put two-and-two together and solved the mystery (or at least a commenter on the post solved it for me by mentioning the album of the same name that “Free” was taken from). With that tidbit finally in hand, I raced to download the album and its title track that though released in 2004, had eluded me for years.
Fast forward to today and though the it remains in constant rotation on my iTunes, Rodgers’ debut album is actually 10 years old. To commemorate the occasion, the Dallas-bred/Atlanta-based singer is giving the album away for free via her website. Yup, you read that right — Free is now free. Although I’d gladly pay for the album again and again just off the strength of that single, I am still happy nonetheless that Rodgers is giving other slowpokes a chance to get caught up on her first musical offering as we wait for her new album Stargazer, to drop later this year. In the meantime, she’s keeping busy by hitting the road with Zo! and The Foreign Exchange so be sure to check them out if they come to a city near you.
